The Rescue and Intervention Groups in the Mountain of the Civil Guard (GREIM) closed the summer rescue campaign in the province of Huesca with 306 interventions, 13% less than in the summer of 2022, when 353 aids were produced. This is the main data of the balance offered this morning in the Subdelegation of the Government in Huesca, in a press conference in which subdelegate of the Government in Huesca, Carlos Campo, participated; the Lieutenant Colonel Chief of the Command of Huesca, Francisco Pulido; the Lieutenant Colonel of the Air Unit of Huesca, Alberto Rodríguez, and Lieutenant Baín Gutiérrez, Head of the Mountain Area of Jaca.
Campo and Pulido have announced that during this period, the Mountain Civil Guard of Huesca assisted 445 people, compared to 495 served during the same period of the previous year.
The profile of the person rescued during the summer corresponds to a male in 63.3% of cases, with an age between 41 and 50 years (19.5%) and who overestimates his possibilities (53.1%). In terms of the typology of the activities that led to the performance, hiking predominates (52.2%), canyoning (14.3%) and is followed by progression in rough terrain (12.7%). The most common type of accident are trips and falls at the same level (35.9%) followed by physical problems (16.34%) and falls in vertical (8.5%).
The consequences of the accidents resulted in 198 unscathed people, 236 injuries and 11 deaths.
The rescue group that has made the most interventions has been that of Boltaña, with 92 rescues. He was followed by Benasque (83), Panticosa (56), Huesca (40) and Jaca (35).
Autumn Prudence
The Deputy Government Delegate and the Lieutenant Colonel Chief of the Command have stressed that all the security councils that are periodically reiterated from different institutions are taken into account to avoid this type of accident.
The seasonal balance shows that most of the rescues have been related to profiles with little experience in carrying out mountain activities, which have overestimated their possibilities and have not taken into account the risks involved in the mountain.
The subdelegate, Carlos Campo, recalled the importance of “not trusting and having the right equipment for the activity that is going to be carried out”. He has also asked for prudence in the coming months, since “the autumn brings intense rains like last week.” Campo has recommended to be informed through official channels, such as AEMET, before planning any departure, and to follow at all times the recommendations issued by the Civil Guard and other emergency services.
The deputy delegate thanked “the extraordinary performance of the armed institute in its rescue activity, a work that involves preparation, effort and risk that deserve the recognition of the whole society.” In the same way, Campo has highlighted “the institutional collaboration in this matter with the Government of Aragón, through 112 SOS Aragón and 061 Health”.
