On Thursday, the Government’s delegate in Aragon, Rosa Serrano, presided over the celebration of the World Meteorological Day on the 73rd anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization. This day aims to show how national meteorological and hydrological services make an essential contribution to the safety and well-being of society. On this occasion, the commemoration is entitled “The future of time, climate and water through generations”, thus highlighting the role that knowledge of meteorological, climatic and hydrological phenomena will play in the well-being of future societies. The event was also attended by the subdelegate in Zaragoza, Fernando Beltrán and the territorial delegate of the State Meteorology Agency in Aragón (AEMET), Rafael Requena.
During the meeting, three collaborators of the Aemet in the Autonomous Community were honored, specifically Ramón Galindo de Jaca; Jesús Acín, who collaborates in the town of Sáabas; and Piedad Pascual, from Ejulve. In addition, one of the last retirees of the agency in Aragon, Julián Gimeno, who had been providing services in this center since 1988, has been honored.
AEMET’s delegate in Aragon, Rafael Requena, has warned about the “legacy we are going to leave to future generations”, understanding that water has “a fundamental importance” in the evolution of the climate and where there may be more “uncertainties for the coming decades”.
For her part, the delegate of the Government in Aragon, Rosa Serrano, has indicated that “the future of our country must necessarily be based on an ecological transition that protects our planet and its diversity, in a search for social justice materialized in dignified working conditions, in the end of inequalities and poverty, in the achievement of real equality between men and women, in the protection and reinforcement of our public services that have been so essential in the past health crisis.” In his speech he said that this is “the only valid way to win the race for climate change”.
About the work of the AEMET, Serrano has expressed that it is “the one that allows us to land and concretize our objectives to fight climate change and, at the same time, to improve the daily life of the Aragonese and the Aragonese by offering effective responses to the challenges that constantly present themselves before us”, such as the management of forest fires or floods in the Ebro riverbed.
