The delegate of the Government of Spain in Andalusia, Pedro Fernández, today closed the reading of the institutional manifesto on the occasion of the National Day of LGBTI Pride, recalling that “equality and non-discrimination are social achievements in which the current Government of Spain, together with civil society, will continue to walk the path of tolerance, respect, coexistence and love”, for which he has launched an appeal to “defend these advances against a minority wants to impose, from hatred, its retrograde thinking towards the tolerant majority”.
In the delegate’s opinion, “now more than ever we have to defend the progress achieved to achieve a plural, diverse and free society, which guarantees and respects the individual freedom and integral development of each of its members.” “Today Spain is a pioneering country and a world leader in the recognition and expansion of civil rights, especially those that affect the freedom of people,” he said.
He pointed out that these advances have come since 2005, when Law 13/2005 on marriage between people of the same sex was approved “or, the most recent, Law 4/2023, of February 28, for the real and effective equality of trans people and for the guarantee of the rights of LGTBI people, in force since March 2.” “We have passed laws that protect citizens and advance equal rights at a pace that we cannot allow to slow down, let alone paralyze,” insisted the delegate, who has opted to “continue betting and fighting until real equality is achieved.”
To achieve this, “we must eliminate all the barriers and dikes that, today, prevent LGBTI people from developing their life projects without any kind of discrimination” and especially “fight against homophobic aggression, labor discrimination and situations of inequality”.
Therefore, he considered, “we still have work to do to guarantee real and effective freedom, equality within the framework of the most absolute respect for diversity” and to do so “for each of us, for the memory of those who dreamed of a better Spain but could never see it and for all those who will succeed us”. “We must not forget that they are our rights, those of our family, friends, neighbours and neighbours, they are the rights of an entire country,” she said.
Representatives of associations, institutions and administrations, accompanied by members of civil society, have participated in the reading of the Institutional Declaration on the occasion of the National Day of LGBTI Pride, which was carried out by the filmmaker Laura Hojman, with Sergio Morante as master of ceremonies, after which the rainbow flag has been deployed from the South Tower of the Plaza de España to visualize the effective support for sexual freedom and equality.
