The delegate of the Government of Spain in Andalusia, Pedro Fernández, today presided over the act of commemoration of the 199th anniversary of the creation of the National Police, where he recognized “how these professionals have maintained unalterable their values of respect, defense and citizen security despite social, political and economic circumstances for two centuries,” a fact for which he has conveyed his congratulations, which has expanded to civil society, administrations and institutions “because we must be proud of having a body of professionals that guarantees us the free exercise of rights and coexistence in a democratic framework,” he emphasized.
For Fernández, the daily work of the National Police “is a latent demonstration that being a police officer is an exercise in personal empathy, responsibility for the well-being of others and to serve the values contained in our Constitution”, to which has added its “great capacity for adaptation, as we have seen in the years of pandemic or now with the new crimes of cybercrime and digital coexistence”.
The delegate has recognized that “security is a public good that the Government takes care of and builds because we are fully aware of the complexity and plurality of today’s society”, hence for four years “the Ministry of the Interior is responding to its commitment to increase the personnel and resources of the State Security Forces and Corps”. In fact, he recalled that the staff in the demarcation of the Superior Headquarters of Western Andalusia amounts to 6,647 agents, “the largest in two centuries of history and 241 agents more than 4 years ago”.
Another of the aspects he has highlighted in recent years is the continuous increase in the number of women joining the Corps or the implementation of the University Center of the National Police, “which has marked the beginning of a new stage focused on achieving greater preventive and operational capacity.” “All these advances are not circumstantial, but are the road map that the Government of Spain is marking to achieve excellence in all areas with a great sense of State,” he said.
Pedro Fernandez has especially conveyed his congratulations to the 12 comrades who have received the Police Merit Medal “for their trajectories to those who have retired or for their heroism and dedication to the ultimate consequences of those who have died in an act of service, who awaken our admiration, respect and deepest gratitude.”
