The Government Delegation hosted this morning the meeting of the Traffic, Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility Commission to address road accident data 2023, and provisional accident advance in the first quarter of 2024. In the same way as in the rest of the national territory, there has been an increase in the number of road accidents with victims, both in urban and interurban roads. This meeting revealed the increase in the number of accidents involving victims compared to those recorded in 2022 (from 257 to 418), as well as the number of hospitalized patients (from 10 in 2022 we have increased to 16 in 2023).
In 2023, one person died as a result of traffic accidents. All those killed on urban roads since 2020 have been vulnerable users (pedestrians and motorcycle users).
With respect to the first quarter of 2024, the provisional figures also recorded a slight increase compared to the same period of 2023, going from 72 accidents with victims in 2023 to 81 in 2024.
The main causes of accidents were distractions (remembering that the main cause of distraction is the use of the mobile phone) and inadequate speed.
In addition, the activities carried out within the Provincial Subcommittee on Road Education have been reviewed, with training sessions in the various primary and secondary schools, as well as in the field of disability; and the provision of online courses aimed at teachers, on cycling training and methodological strategies derived from the entry into force of the LOMLOE.
