- Marisol Garmendia shows her “pride” for this “recognition of the immense work that is being done from this center”
- The statement from the UN coincides with the guided visit to the Observatory carried out on the occasion of the Open House Week of the General State Administration
The Igeldo Meteorological Observatory has just been recognized by the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) as the centennial maritime and terrestrial meteorological center of Spain, the first in Spain and the tenth in the world. This statement was confirmed by the Government delegate in the Basque Country, Marisol Garmendia, during the guided visit by the renowned meteorologist and head of AEMET in the Basque Country, Margarita Martín, which took place this morning at the Observatory itself on the occasion of the Open Doors Week of the General Administration of the State.
“This visit is also a celebration because it coincides with the communication that has reached us from the UN. It is very good news that recognizes the immense work that is being carried out from this Meteorological Center of Igeldo. For us it is a pride and we want to celebrate it and share it with the citizens”, announced Marisol Garmendia.
The Igeldo Meteorological Observatory (1905) was created by Juan Miguel Orkolaga in 1905. Currently, the Observatory is attached to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and its observations are part of the main network, due to the age of its series and to having been generally in charge of specialized personnel. The Observatory building consists of a small four-storey observation tower, an adjoining two-storey building and a rear landscaped space in which most of the sensors are installed. The visit organized by the government subdelegation in Gipuzkoa was guided today by Margarita Martín and also meteorologist Pilar Lopez and was attended by 40 people.
