The government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, announced this Friday that the study of investments to materialize the railway motorway that will connect the Port of Santander with the Plateau, specifically from Valladolid to the Cantabrian capital, will be addressed in 2026.
“Currently, the Ministry of Transport, through Adif, is carrying out the study of gauges of the entire railway network and the Valencia-Palencia Santander section, historically demanded by the Port Authority,” said Casares, who with that information next year will address the study to make the necessary investments. “That’s our commitment,” I said.
The government delegate said so this Friday at the opening ceremony of the extension of the tracks for container cranes in the Port of Santander, an infrastructure that has involved an investment of 2.48 million euros and that allows two ships to load containers simultaneously at the port terminal of Boluda.
Casares has also detailed that the Port Authority of Santander will have at its disposal in December the results of the demand study for the railway highway to Madrid and for the establishment of green maritime corridors with northern Europe. “From there, it will allow us to continue with the study,” he said.
In his speech at the event, the government delegate stressed that the Port of Santander “has not stopped growing in recent years” and has highlighted the commitment of the Government of Spain and State Ports to the Cantabrian infrastructure, for which it has obtained almost 50 million European funds and which adds to the 270.3 million public and private investments planned in this Port until 2029.
Investments that “will mean a before and an after”, said Casares, who has insisted on the growth of port operations in Santander in recent years and in which, since 2023, there is “a decisive protagonist” such as the company Boluda.
At this point, he highlighted as a “very important milestone” the extension of the new 170 meter stretch of the tracks of the platform of the pier of Raos 3 for container cranes, which has been necessary for two ships to load simultaneously and which evidences the “success story” of the Boluda terminal.
The delegate has praised the “shared” work of all administrations, Government of Spain, State Ports, Government of Cantabria and Port Authority, and private companies so that the Port continues to reach “levels of excellence” for the “good of Cantabria”, in which it represents 14% of GDP.
The event was also attended by the president of the Port Authority of Santander, César Díaz; the Minister of Industry of the Government of Cantabria, Eduardo Arasti; and the executive president of Boluda Shipping, Ignacio Boluda. Other regional authorities and representatives of community companies have also attended.
