Devia: “The Subdelegation will never allow the work done by the Civil Guard to be questioned”

Oropesa (Toledo).- The subdelegate of the Government of Spain in the province of Toledo, Carlos Ángel Devia, co-chaired today, together with the mayor of Oropesa, Rubén Zapardiel, the Local Security Board of the municipality.

It has analyzed the evolution of crime in the locality and in the region and has addressed the coordination of security during the next patron saint’s festivities. There, Devia highlighted that Oropesa is one of the municipalities in the region in which crime rates have decreased compared to the previous year and has conveyed a message of tranquility to its neighbors.

He has also defended the dedication, sacrifice, effort, professionalism and commitment of the Civil Guard with all the municipalities in the area: “This subdelegation of the government will never allow the work done by the Civil Guard to be called into question,” said the subdelegate, who warned that the dissemination of messages about situations of insecurity that do not correspond to reality generates an unjustified alarm among the population and can attract criminals.

The analysis presented during the Board has referred to the 21 municipalities that make up the police demarcation of the Campana de Oropesa, with special attention to ten localities whose data present differences with respect to the rest. In five of them, there has been an overall increase in crime of close to eight percent, lower than the provincial average, and concentrated mainly in July and August, months in which the population increases, the influx of visitors and the number of celebrations.

Crimes against property have decreased, while there has been an increase in certain crimes against people, such as threats, injuries or killings. The Chief Colonel of the Civil Guard Command of Toledo, José María Gil Closet, has explained that several significant events recorded at the end of July are attributed to an organized and itinerant group coming from nearby population centers and which continue under investigation.

Gil Closet has pointed out that the action of the Civil Guard focuses on investigation and citizen security patrols. With the available data, it is not considered necessary to establish a special device or a reinforcement superior to that already being carried out. However, it has insisted on the need to report all criminal acts and to transfer any information that may be useful for investigations.

The Chief Colonel also recalled that the Civil Guard provides 24-hour operational attention to any incident through 062 and through functionally distributed patrols to attend the different operational centers, a consolidated organization different from the attention to the citizen that is provided in the cantonments. Permanent coordination with the municipalities

Devia has urged the mayors of the region to use the available coordination mechanisms and to convene local security boards in the municipalities that have Local Police or local security commissions in those that do not have this body. The deputy delegate recalled that it is the mayors who request and convene these bodies, which allow the sharing of information, accurate knowledge of the evolution of crime and agree on the necessary actions in each locality.

He also pointed out that the Government Subdelegation is open to any meeting, suggestion or consultation of municipal officials.

The mayor of Oropesa, Rubén Zapardiel, has highlighted the constant and daily coordination maintained by the Local Police and the Civil Guard. He also recalled that the City Council convenes three local security boards a year: one to know and analyze the general crime data, another to prepare the device of the Medieval Days and a third one intended for the patron saint’s parties.

Zapardiel has valued the effort made by the City Council to have a Local Police and a video surveillance system and has encouraged the rest of the mayors to allocate, within their possibilities, municipal resources to security to collaborate with the Security Forces and Bodies. He also recalled the importance of convening local security boards or commissions and maintaining direct contact with the Civil Guard posts and their officials.

Security during the patron saint’s festivities

The Local Security Board has also addressed the planning and coordination of security in the upcoming patron saint’s parties, a period in which Oropesa has a greater influx of public. The aim is to prevent incidents and ensure a coordinated response during the celebration process.

The patron saint festivities of Nuestra Señora de las Peñitas will be held from 8 to 10 September and include, among other traditional events, the procession of the Virgin from her hermitage, fireworks, orchestras, dances and competitions. Later, on September 18 and 19, the festivities will take place in honor of the patron saint San Alonso de Orozco, with his traditional procession and different festive activities.
