- In particular, nearly 100 million euros are allocated to the new high-speed workshop in Fuencarral II that doubles the standard width train maintenance capacity of this complex. It is expected that its 18,900 m2 will be available before the end of the year.
- The next five years are expected More than 60 performances in workshops, among which are the new ones of Cerca Madrid in Aranjuez, Móstoles–El Soto and Fuencarral; those of Rodalies for Ripoll, Manresa, Sant Andreu or the expansion of Vilanova i la Geltrú.
- To this should be added the projects for high-speed trains and goods in Murcia, Malaga, Santander and Valencia, as well as new bases in Almería, Irún and La Sagra.
- The minister has thus presented the Comprehensive Plan of Workshops and Maintenance of Renfe 2025-2030 as “the largest investment in railway maintenance in its history and one of the most relevant industrial commitments of the Government in public transport”.
The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, today announced an investment of 1,000 million euros to launch an ambitious Integral Plan of Workshops and Maintenance of Renfe for the period between 2025 and 2030, “the largest investment in railway maintenance in its history and one of the most relevant industrial commitments of the Government of Spain in public transport”.
Today Óscar Puente visited the new Renfe high-speed workshop at Fuencarral II in Madrid, accompanied by the company’s president, Álvaro Fernández Heredia, where he defined this Plan as “a new maintenance model that optimizes resources, reduces time and improves the reliability of trains in circulation”.
The facilities visited today have an investment of close to 100 million euros to build this new ship of 18,900 m2 that will allow doubling the maintenance capacity of trains of standard width and which, according to the minister, “is expected to be operational before the end of the year, being the result of a clear strategy, coordinated work and responsible planning”.
They will be “facilities that incorporate all the experience of Renfe Maintenance, fully prepared to service the new high-speed trains, with the technology and equipment necessary to guarantee their integral maintenance”, added the head of Transportes.
Renfe Workshop and Maintenance Plan 2025–2030
The plan presented today by Minister plans to mobilise 1 billion euros throughout the national territory and represents, according to Puente, a country vision through the generation of employment, development of industry and territorial cohesion in the service of sustainable mobility.
As reported by the head of the Department, the actions planned over the next 5 years include:
- The new workshops of OSP Cerca Madrid, where the one of Aranjuez, Móstoles – El Soto and also another in Fuencarral are in execution or project, with an investment of 48 million euros and where the project is already being drafted.
- The new workshops of OSP Rodalies Catalunya, with about 100 million already in project or execution for the new workshop of Ripoll, Manresa, Sant Andreu or the expansion of Vilanova i la Geltrú.
- Projects in Murcia, Malaga, Santander and Valencia, as well as new bases in Almería, Irun and La Sagra for high-speed trains and goods.
In short, Puente has detailed that “there are more than 60 workshops in action, of which 10 are already in execution or with a project, and each of them will boost economic activity, generate opportunities and fill the territory through employment and innovation”.
It is also contemplated the implementation of three new Logistics Centers of Park Parts in key locations such as La Sagra, Venta de Baños and Villaverde, along with the adaptation of the workshop of El Berrón for the pieces of park of trains of metric width.
Renfe’s new, more innovative maintenance model
One of the fundamental pillars of the new plan is the new maintenance model, which incorporates technologies to improve the service to the traveler or monitoring systems in real time to detect possible incidents before they occur. In addition, on-track automatic inspection systems, digital tools for operations management and modernized industrial equipment are introduced in the workshops. Likewise, it is committed to the digitalization of processes, the automation of tasks and the installation of energy-efficient systems.
The minister has been satisfied with these innovations of the new model and, according to him, “thanks to the reorganization of processes and digitalization, the time spent in the workshop is reduced by 29%, which means more available trains, more punctuality and a more efficient service for all citizens”.
According to the head of Transport, the new model incorporates technology in each phase and a new way of thinking about maintenance: anticipating before something fails and doing it better, faster and with fewer resources.
“This is how Renfe is progressing: with innovation, with responsibility and with a view to the future, where Renfe is consolidated as an innovative, sustainable and competitive public company, capable of leading rail transport in Europe”, concluded Óscar Puente.
