The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, has met today with the ambassador of Cuba in Spain, Marcelino Medina, to discuss the extension of the deadline for the descendants of Spaniards exiled to the Caribbean island during the Civil War to apply for Spanish nationality.
The Ministry will extend for another year, until the end of 2025, the period for family members to be able to make requests, as stated in the Democratic Memory Act of 2022.
“I have transferred the ambassador of Cuba who will visit the countries that welcomed the exiles, to give all the information about the procedures. We consider this to be good news for those who want to acquire Spanish nationality,” the minister said.
A total of 36,117 applications for citizenship have arrived at the Spanish Consulate in Havana until January 31 of this year. 24,087 have been approved and 19,359 people are already registered. Only 358 petitions have been denied.
