The idea of the Masonic Judeo conspiracy obsessed General Franco until his death. The alleged existence of a terrible conspiracy against Spain that included Jews, Freemasons, Communists, separatists and leftists in general, responsible for the material and spiritual ills of our history, was established as an unquestionable truth. An “anti-Spain” and “Secret Powers” against which it was necessary to revolt until they were annihilated.
The myth of the conspiracy acquired special relevance in Spain from the thirties of the 20th century, becoming from the conservative mentality one of the supposedly legitimizing reasons of the military uprising of July 1936 and of the need for a saving “crusade” of the Homeland.
The Exhibition “The Masonic Judeo Conspiracy. The construction of a myth” has been inaugurated at the Centro Sefarad Israel, in Madrid, by the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, Fernando Martínez.
Commissioned by the professor of the University of Seville, Leandro Álvarez Rey, the exhibition proposes a tour of five rooms that address issues such as the presence of Jews in Spain, a history marked by persecution, expulsion and exclusion. The presence, activities and real influence of Masonry and its members in Spanish society until 1936. What role did the Catholic Church play in spreading this hatred against Jews and Freemasons; and – as early as the 1930s – the importance that the conspiracy myth would reach as a key element of the political propaganda of conservative parties. The tour ends by showing the public what was the Special Tribunal for the Suppression of Masonry and Communism, created by Franco in 1940 and whose performance lasted for more than twenty years.
