The Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, Fernando Martínez, claimed the work of the Government in the interest of repairing the memory and dignity of the victims of the dictatorship in an enclave, “that has become a place of victory for justice and democratic values in the face of the impunity of Franco’s regime”.
For his part, Carmina Gustrán celebrated the opening of this dossier, which makes visible the link of the Pazo "with Franco's repression, the abuse of power, intolerance and violence."
María Rivas deepened the pride that these advances promoted by the Government in justice with the reactionaries and reactionaries in Meira represent for the whole of Sadan society and Coruñesa. “This pasture is not only a patrimonial and cultural good, but a place of social pedagogy, where memory becomes a right of citizenship and a guarantee of the future,” said the subdelegate, also recalling the cultural legacy of Emilia Pardo Bazán within these walls.
On December 5, 1938, after the creation of the so-called Junta Pro-Pazo del Caudillo, composed of the civil governor and several mayors of the province, who intended to buy and deliver the property to the head of the State, Francisco Franco, was handed over from the estate to the dictator. The Official State Gazette indicates that during the process of pazo conditioning the land was expanded “through repressive and coercive techniques”, which dispossessed the legitimate owners of the surrounding farms. In addition, “appropriations of public and private resources, from Romanesque statues to baptismal piles, tapestries, etc.” were made.
When used by the dictator as an official summer residence, it acquired a political function, of explaining the nature of Franco’s regime and repression; a symbolic function, of representation, and had a great impact on local life, including the articulation of local and provincial networks of Franco’s power.
On September 2, 2020, the Court of First Instance number 1 of A Coruña, following a lawsuit filed by State Law, ruled that the Pazo was State property, declaring null and void the personal donation of the same to Franco to his family.
Two months later, the sentence was served and, since December 10, 2020, it ceased to be the property of the Franco family and became the property of the State. The judgment was corroborated by the Provincial Court of A Coruña, on February 12, 2021, and by the Court of First Instance number 70 of Madrid, which, on November 7, 2024, granted the General Administration of the State the totality of the assets claimed.
