The Illustrious Colegio de la Abogacía de Madrid (ICAM) presented yesterday its new Section on Gender Violence in an event in which the Government’s subdelegate, Pilar Trinidad, stressed that “the fight against gender violence is a transversal priority of the Government Delegation in Madrid, as it is of the Government of Spain”.
For this reason, he thanked the initiative of the ICAM, while recalling the competences and functions that, within the Government Delegation, are carried out by the Coordination Unit against Violence against Women and the Violence Unit, especially in terms of awareness-raising – with its collaboration within the Master Plan for Coexistence and Improvement of School Safety in Schools and their Environments – or in the incorporation of the municipalities of the Community of Madrid into the system of monitoring and integral protection of the victims of gender violence VioGén 2. This deployment involves coordination with the Security Forces and Corps, specialized training and constant resources so that no victim is left unprotected due to lack of territorial coverage.
During his speech, framed in a day entitled “Economic violence: dependence, control and new legal responses”, he also focused on a form of abuse that has often been invisible and poorly studied: economic violence.
This type of violence is not limited to restricting access to material resources, but perpetuates dependence and control within relationships. Its consequences go far beyond the economic: it impacts on personal autonomy, dignity and the real ability to make decisions of their own.
According to data from the Ministry of Equality’s Macro-Survey on Violence against Women/Government Delegation against Gender Violence, a very high proportion of women who suffer physical or sexual violence have also suffered psychological, control or economic violence.
A specialized response
The Colegio de la Abogacía de Madrid has created this new Section specifically dedicated to Gender Violence, with the aim of offering a solid and specialized institutional response to a reality that constantly challenges the legal field.
Presided over by the lawyer Lola Calderón, it was born with a vocation to become a technical and legal reference in this matter, paying special attention to the needs of the professionals of the Official Duty who intervene in these cases.
Among its main lines of work, the Section will promote the continuous and specialized training of lawyers in Madrid, promote their participation in the legal and regulatory debate, and facilitate dialogue between the legal sector and public protection policies.
More than 50 active sections
The ICAM Sections are specialized areas created to address issues of legal relevance from a professional and institutional perspective. Currently, the College has more than 50 active Sections, led by more than 80 professionals, which makes it the collegiate institution with the highest degree of sectoral specialization in the country. All of them function as active forums for debate, training and the generation of legal proposals.
