From that year, the Royal Annual Decrees that regulate scholarships expressly incorporate that the grants received under Royal Decree-Law 20/2021, of 5 October, which adopted urgent support measures for the repair of the damages caused by the volcanic eruptions and for the economic and social reconstruction of the island of La Palma, will not be included in the total resources of the applicant families. This means that the fact of receiving aid for the volcano does not impair or limit the right to obtain a general scholarship, provided that the student meets the established academic and economic requirements.
The measure adds to the extraordinary aid of € 623 for residents of the island, in this case not related to the volcano, but which also takes into account the special circumstances of mobility in territories such as La Palma and other locations of the ultraperiphery. Izquierdo added that “the reconstruction is also to guarantee opportunities, that no young pigeon can lose his right to study because he is receiving aid that precisely seeks to repair the damage suffered.”
In this way, the State consolidates a measure that supposes fundamental economic support to access and remain in post-compulsory education. These grants range from partial exemption of fees to supplements of residence, transport or excellence, and are a key tool for equal opportunities in the Spanish educational system, preventing economic reasons from impeding the continuity of studies. For the academic year 2026-2027, the call has a historical budget, of 2,559 million euros.
