In the presentation of the event, the Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, stressed that “the ability of La Palma to transform adversity into knowledge, cooperation and scientific projects, shows that reconstruction must be understood not only in terms of infrastructure, but also as a determined commitment to science and innovation as levers of future development.”
The tribute paid to Francisco Sánchez recalls his essential role in turning La Palma into an international reference point for astrophysics: his impetus for the creation of the IAC, the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, and the Gran Telescope Canarias (GTC), as well as his pioneering defense of the protection of the night sky through the Sky Law.
Izquierdo pointed out that investment in scientific infrastructure in La Palma should not be considered an expense, but a strategic investment that strengthens the social and economic fabric of the island; an effort that will contribute directly to the growth of the island’s GDP, diversifying the economy and offering new employment opportunities of high level of specialization, talent and innovation.
Finally, the Commissioner reiterated his commitment to continue supporting scientific initiatives in La Palma, facilitating institutional coordination, resources and structural measures for the island to consolidate its status as an international reference in astrophysics, volcanology and blue economy.
