The National Plan for Seismic, Volcanological and Other Geophysical Monitoring was approved by the Council of Ministers on March 4, 2025, with 58 measures to strengthen the monitoring and detection networks of destructive natural phenomena, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis or space storms, and to improve the communication and response systems, deepening the coordination between the different administrations.
This plan is expected to be very useful for the period 2025-2028, which will have multiple results, due to technological improvements, densification of surveillance networks, efficiency in resource management and attention to emerging risks, as well as communication of alerts and progress in community resilience.
The Plan, planned by the National Geographic Institute (IGN), was born driven by the eruption of the volcano on the island of La Palma in 2021 and other seismo-volcanic crises, according to the Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of the island of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo.
