The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, presided today in Valencia an act of remembrance and tribute to the victims of Franco’s regime, in which the declarations of reparation and personal recognition under the Democratic Memory Law have been delivered.
These acknowledgements, given to relatives, declare illegal and illegitimate the courts and jurors that condemned these people and declare null and void all convictions, sanctions or resolutions against them.
Torres, who chaired the event together with the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, and the Delegate of the Government in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé, accompanied by the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, Fernando Martínez, stressed the importance of a meeting that officially recognizes people who were humiliated, mistreated and killed for defending freedom and constitutional order. These statements fulfill the right to know the truth of what happened, to recognize and repair people and families who lived through decades of silence. “All of them were innocent victims whom we honor here today,” he said.
The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory has insisted on his commitment to continue developing and enhancing the Democratic Memory Law and has invited the autonomous communities that promote laws of “concord” to negotiate with the Government of Spain its content “so that they really are laws that promote reparation, truth and justice.”
