The Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, Fernando Martínez, presided today in A Coruña, the constitution and first meeting of the Technical Commission of the Pazo de Mearas.
Government Delegation in Galicia, A Cpruña
At the meeting, Martínez pointed out that the intention of the Government is that Meiré becomes a reference for the recovery of the Democratic Memory of our country. He explained that the objective of the executive is to defend the general interests of the public heritage of Spaniards.
This Commission is created on the proposal of the first vice-president, Carmen Calvo, at the meeting held on December 9 in A Coruña, following the judicial decision that gave State Heritage the ownership of the property, in provisional execution. It involves the institutions interested in the future use of the Pazo: the Xunta de Galicia, the Diputación de A Coruña and the consistories of Sada and A Coruña.
At this meeting, the Secretary of State proposed a framework for collaboration between the various institutions and the General Administration of the State, which could be concretized with the signing of a collaboration agreement. In this regard, and in relation to the uses that are going to be given to the Pazo, it has been proposed that a group of experts help to make the most appropriate decision.
The Secretary of State also said that the visits to the Pazo de Mearas should be resumed as soon as possible and serve to explain the reality of the recent history of Spain, from a democratic point of view, far from the exaltation of the dictator that was carried out until now in the building. Finally, he has stressed that we must bear in mind that the Pazo was once owned by Emilia Pardo Bazán, so it must also be a place of reference and demand of Galician and Spanish culture.
The Secretary of State for Democratic Memory wanted to highlight the climate of cooperation between all the administrations represented in the Commission, which will allow all the administrations, each within the framework of its competences, to collaborate in a coordinated manner with the General Administration of the State, which is the depositary of the good, in the preservation and conservation of the place.
Before the constitution of the Technical Commission, the Secretary of State held a working meeting with researchers and academic experts, knowledgeable about the characteristics and history of the property.
