The delegate of the Government of Spain in the Community of Madrid, Francisco Martín, wanted to point out that the negationism of gender violence “is a political irresponsibility that erodes our democracy” during his speech at the gala of delivery of the Meninas Awards 2025 on the occasion of the 25N, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
In his words, he has defended that this negationism “weakens the trust of the victims in the institutions and sends a devastating message” and belittles their suffering, is “to turn our backs on the evidence, justice and memory of the murdered women.”
The event, chaired by the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, and also attended by the Undersecretary of the Interior, Susana Crisóstomo, or the Director General of the Civil Guard, among other authorities, has begun with a minute of silence for all women victims of gender violence and children orphaned as a result of these crimes.
Francisco Martín has claimed the progress made in these 50 years of democracy but, at the same time, he has pointed out that, at this point, it is “essential that all institutions support this battle with conviction.” In this regard, he referred to the case of the woman murdered in Alpedrete, “we cannot accept taking steps backwards, ambiguities or silences,” he added.
Likewise, it has again called for the incorporation into the ViogGén system of the municipalities of Madrid with more than eight local police who have not joined and the participation of the Government of the Community of Madrid in the table to analyze the violence against women in the region promoted by the Government Delegation. And he has affirmed that, from the Government of Spain, it will continue to deepen the legislation and measures to fight machista violence and protect the victims. “Only by persevering on this path can we overcome machismo,” he said.
For her part, Minister Ana Redondo, has denounced how violence has been inserted into social networks and threatens to reverse many of the advances achieved. And, on the other hand, he recalled that all the great advances have been made with consensus. “You can’t do it any other way” because then it’s harder and it takes a lot longer.
Tribute 50 years in Libertad
A video has also been screened in tribute to the 50 years in Libertad with a summary of the freedom achieved these years in the field of the fight against Gender Violence; in addition, the gala has had a theatrical intervention and a musical performance with this same theme.
