- The government delegate in Cantabria has announced the granting of both recognitions after a meeting with the head of the Unit for the Coordination of Violence on Women, Diana Mirones
The journalist and presenter Pepa Bueno and the Association CAVAS Cantabria will receive next Saturday, November 15, the Menina recognition of the Delegation of the Government of Spain in Cantabria for its involvement in the fight against gender violence, as well as for its work of raising awareness against this social scourge.
The government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, met with the head of the Delegation’s Violence against Women Coordination Unit, Diana Mirones, after receiving the two meninas that the Ministry of Equality has sent for these recognitions in the region.
After that, Casares has informed the journalist from Extremadura and the president and director of CAVAS, Gema Solís, of the granting of this recognition by the Government Delegation in its sixth edition in the autonomous community.
Casares stressed that, with this recognition from the Ministry of Equality, she wants to praise the work of a communication professional such as Pepa Bueno, with more than three decades of experience in which “she has practiced rigorous journalism with a gender perspective”.
“Pepa Bueno has always done a journalism committed to equality. One of the most feminist journalistic voices in our country”, said the government delegate, who added that “her voice has been not only a safe haven to defend equality but also a powerful loudspeaker against male violence”.
He stressed that the second Menina recognition from the Ministry of Equality is for CAVAS, a leading association in Cantabria and that, in its 31 years, it has become “an essential resource in the comprehensive care of victims of sexual violence”.
“The fight for equality and against male violence must be a collective task, of the whole society, and both Pepa Bueno and CAVAS develop
an essential role from their professional fields”, said the representative of the State.
For Casares, “gender violence and the murders of 35 women as early as 2025 are the tip of the iceberg of a huge inequality gap in our society” and that Pepa Bueno contributes to palliate from the treatment it gives to information as a journalist and presenter, and CAVAS from its personalized attention to victims of sexual crimes.
ACT OF DELIVERY AT THE CASYC UP
The delegate of the Government has advanced that the Menina recognition to Pepa Bueno and the CAVAS Association, which consists of a sculpture in the forge of a menina, will be delivered next Saturday, November 15, at 11:00, in an act in the Casyc UP Room of the Caja Cantabria Foundation.
Pepa Bueno is awarded the Menina in recognition of his professional career of more than three decades in national reference media, where he has exercised a rigorous journalism committed and with a gender perspective, contributing decisively to make machista violence visible, offering a voice to the victims and pointing out the social and institutional responsibility in its eradication.
His work has brought silenced realities closer to the citizens, creating a public discourse in favor of equality. Its impact on Spanish society transcends journalistic work, consolidating itself as a reference figure in the defense of women's rights.
“Its commitment to truthful and sensitive information on gender-based violence, as well as its ability to generate opinion and debate in the highest media, further reinforce the granting of this recognition,” said the government delegate.
While the CAVAS Cantabria Association, founded in 1994, is recognized as an essential resource in the comprehensive care of victims of sexual violence in the autonomous community. With a multidisciplinary team specializing in psychological, legal and social support, she has accompanied women, girls and boys who have suffered sexual assaults for more than three decades.
Its work is articulated in close collaboration with the security forces and bodies, the health and judicial area, ensuring an immediate response,
Coordinated and of quality. It also develops prevention and awareness programs in educational centers, and actively participates in the implementation of Violeta Points in the region.
“Its impact is unquestionable, serving hundreds of people every year and consolidating itself as a pillar in the network of support against gender violence. His trajectory shows a firm and continuous commitment to the protection of victims and the promotion of equality,” said Casares.
