The Government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, accompanied by the island director of the General Administration of the State in Lanzarote, Pedro Viera, today presented Olivia Cedrés with the Medal for the Promotion of Equality Values, awarded by the Ministry of Equality of the Government of Spain.
At the handover ceremony, held at the headquarters of the Insular Directorate of the General Administration of the State in Lanzarote, Anselmo Pestana has recognized the contribution of Olivia Cedrés as a member of the General Courts for the achievement of the Organic Law of Comprehensive Protection Measures against Gender Violence, whose approval is 20 years old: “His support and commitment to equality and justice were essential for this law to become a reality. Today we give him this recognition, because we know that, without his work, it would not have been possible to take this fundamental step in the fight against gender violence.”
“The 20th anniversary of this law is not only a time to celebrate the achievements made, and to recognize all the men and women who made it possible from different areas, but also to renew our determination to eradicate male violence,” said the government delegate in the Canary Islands, who also recalled the 1,333 women and 65 boys and girls killed by gender violence since there are records.
The Medal for the Promotion of the Values of Equality is a decoration awarded on an individual basis by Order of the Minister of Equality, on the proposal of the holder of the Secretary of State for Equality and for the Eradication of Violence against Women, in order to recognize the work of those persons who have distinguished themselves in a relevant way in the exercise and promotion of the values of equality and in the elimination of all kinds of discrimination based on any personal or social condition.
This 2025, the Government of Spain has granted this distinction to 94 people, who contributed to the legislative approval of the Organic Law on Comprehensive Protection Measures against Gender Violence, including María del Carmen Castellano, Patricia Hernández, Juan Fernando López Aguilar, José Mendoza, Román Rodríguez and Gustavo Santana.
