The government delegate, Anselmo Pestana, has presented today What do you know about gender-based violence?, the new audiovisual campaign to inform and raise awareness of this social scourge launched by the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands, through its Coordination Unit against Violence against Women.
At a press conference in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Anselmo Pestana reported on the content of this initiative accompanied by Evelia Déniz, head of the Service against Violence against Women of the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands, who has toured the archipelago to offer information on gender violence at street level.
“One of the main budgetary items used by this Government Delegation is that which refers to the dissemination and awareness against gender violence. We take this issue very seriously. And not only because of the use of State Pact funds, but also because of our own commitment to eradicating this social scourge. Therefore, We are always looking for new channels, new ways to reach society with a clear message: gender violence is still there, in places, activities, which perhaps go unnoticed. And we all have to identify it and fight it,” says the government delegate.
“On this occasion we wanted to look for another format, to speak to girls and boys, but not only to them, with a perhaps lighter tone, from their mobile phones, directly, through videos in which each and every one of us can see ourselves reflected. These are seven episodes that pose very serious questions to us, but that will bring us a smile at the same time. And, above all, they are going to make us think a lot. It is a campaign that is going to make many people ask questions that have not been raised so far,” he adds.
Seven episodes, seven themes
In What do you know about gender-based violence? A team led by Evelia Déniz travels through the seven Canary Islands where the Government Delegation has an island headquarters to ask different questions and offer answers to people who are in the street, issues that address issues directly or indirectly related to violence against women, such as sexual violence, the myths of love or the use of pornography.
Accompanied by the journalist David Perdomo, the Head of Service against Violence against Women of the Delegation of the Government in the Canary Islands will respond to doubts, but, above all, to erroneous approaches, placing special emphasis on the existence of a whole series of assistance resources for victims and their daughters and sons, sponsored by the State Pact against Gender Violence.
“It has been quite an experience, and for me personally, to step on the street with these issues and, face to face, try to break down myths or correct erroneous concepts that exist about gender violence and its different derivatives. I am very satisfied with the result, particularly because I believe that we send messages that are very necessary and that are going to reach young people directly, fundamentally in terms of the way they relate to each other,” explains Evelia Déniz.
The campaign, financed with funds from the State Pact against Gender Violence and also distributed to the media, will begin to be broadcast on the various information channels and social networks of the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands on September 22, when the episode recorded in Gran Canaria dedicated to sexual violence will be launched.
The broadcast will extend until the week before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, 25N, two months in which the channel will acquire particular prominence.
