The High Inspection of Education in Catalonia legalizes since June 3, 2013 university academic documentation that has to have effects abroad.
The legalization of original official university academic documents that must have effects abroad is an internationally agreed process, which requires prior recognition of signatures by the corresponding Spanish authorities.
It is the procedure prior to the legalization process by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and, where appropriate, the Ministry of Justice for the following types of academic documents:
- University degrees of an official nature and valid throughout the national territory, issued by the Rectors of Universities.
- Higher and postgraduate education degrees, issued by the Ministry of Education.
- Official academic certifications of studies leading to the achievement of the degrees mentioned in the previous sections.
Recipients: Students who have or are studying in Spain.
Requirements: The documents will always be original. Academic certifications must be signed by handwritten signature and with indication of the charge and full name, no rubrics signed by Order, Absence or Authorization will be recognized.

At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, documents subject to legalization must always be presented accompanied by an Express Postcard envelope containing the destination address and a cylindrical case for titles or diplomas.
In this second case, it is necessary the subsequent recognition of the previous signatures in the Diplomatic or Consular representation in Spain of the country where the document should take effect.

Note 1: In the event that it is desired to continue the procedure in the Territorial Administration of Justice of Catalonia or in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation as appropriate, it must be the interested party himself who presents the documentation to be legalized by his own means.
Note 2: It is advisable that in advance of the legalization process, the interested parties contact the diplomatic delegations in Spain of the country of destination of the documents in order to know which documents should be legalized.
