From tomorrow, Friday, at 3 p.m. until midnight on Tuesday, 6 January, the Directorate-General for Traffic has established a traffic regulation, monitoring and control system due to the increase in road trips that will take place during the Christmas celebrations.
During this period, traffic forecasts 22.4 million trips, 659,000 of them in Asturias, distributed in three phases that coincide with the main festivities:
1st phase, Christmas: From Friday 19 to Thursday 25 of December. For this first period, 8.5 million trips are planned, of which 251,000 will be made in Asturias.
2nd phase, New Year's Eve: From Friday, December 26 to Thursday, January 1.
3rd phase, Reyes: From Friday 2 to Tuesday 6 January 2026, when the special Christmas device will be concluded.
Many of the trips, both long and short, especially during weekends and holidays, will be directed to the second residence, mountain areas for winter sports, places of winter tourist attraction, as well as areas or areas of large shopping centers.
To cover all these journeys, the DGT has prepared a special operation that includes regulation, management and surveillance measures that guarantee mobility and fluidity on the roads and, at the same time, ensure their road safety.
To this end, the DGT has the maximum availability of its human resources (Agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, official personnel of the Traffic Management Centers, Helicopter patrols and personnel responsible for the maintenance of equipment and the installation of measures on the road) which, among other functions, will be responsible for:
- Facilitate the mobility and fluidity of traffic, as well as ensuring road safety on the roads.
- The works on the roads will be paralysed, the holding of sports tests and other events involving the occupation of the road will be limited and the movement of freight trucks in general and those transporting certain goods in certain sections, dates and times will be restricted.
- Maintain traffic for all types of vehicles on roads with sections or areas affected by adverse weather conditions such as snow, ice, fog, rain and wind in the appropriate road safety conditions.
- Assist users in any incident or unforeseen that may arise on the trip, as well as monitor the correct behavior of road users with the human and technical means available to the agency: fixed and mobile speed control radars, in addition to helicopters, drones, cameras and camouflaged vans to control the use of mobile and seat belts.
- Timely reporting of any road incidents through traffic information bulletins on the different radio and television stations, on the web https://etraffic.dgt.es/etrafficWEB/, on Twitter @DGTes and @InformacionDGT and on phone 011.
- To intensify speed and blood alcohol controls as an instrument for the prevention of road accidents.
